What Is The Meaning Or Definition Of Intersex / Intersexual: The term “intersex” is derived from “inter,” which means “mixed,” and “sex,” which means “related to sex,” hence, “inter-sex” literally means “a person who has both male and female characteristics.” The term “intersex” is used to describe a person who has a combination of male and female biological sex characteristics that aren’t traditionally associated with male or female bodies, and hence, that puts them somewhere outside the binary “male” and “female” genders. Intersex variations may include variations in hormone concentrations, chromosome compositions, and external and internal characteristics, and there can be other factors as well. An intersex person is born with a reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn’t seem to fit the typical definitions to be distinctly identified as male or female, and they can be cisgender, transgender, or any other gender identity. The term intersex is not interchangeable with or synonymous with transgender. Though, some intersex people do identify as transgender. Intersexuality does not refer to sexual orientation or gender identity. Intersex people were previously referred to as hermaphrodites, but that term is now outdated as it was considered offensive. For instance, a person might be born appearing to be male on the outside appearance, but having mostly male-typical anatomy on the inside. Likewise, a person might be born appearing to be female on the outside appearance, but having primarily female-typical anatomy on the inside. It is general practice that parents and physicians usually choose the sex of the child, which may sometimes result in surgery or hormone treatment. Some intersex grownups want this practice to end because one’s sex at birth may not align with their own sense of gender or identity when one grow up.
